What is Sports Massage?
Sports massage is a deep, invigorating massage and stretching treatment which focuses on the muscles and soft tissues of the body. It can be used to assist an athlete’s performance and prepare for a sporting event or help afterwards in the recovery and rehabilitation phase.
It is not just for sports people, the massage therapists at Staines Chiropractic are trained in remedial massage too; a more relaxing version. Both sports massage and remedial massage can assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue caused by repetitive and strenuous physical activity, poor posture or overuse of certain muscle groups. A variety of techniques are used to help relieve tense muscles, reduce the build-up of scar tissue and aid relaxation. Massage can also be useful in the treatment of specific sporting injuries and post-surgery.
Though it is most commonly thought of as a tool to help alleviate stress and tension and relieve tired and achy muscles (which it does very well!), massage before and after exercise can also help to keep you active by improving flexibility, preventing injury and sorting out those little niggles.
Massage compliments other treatments such as Chiropractic, Physiotherapy and Osteopathy. Here at Staines Chiropractic our massage therapists regularly work together with our other practitioners to co-manage a patient and we are happy to work with other healthcare providers, coaches or managers to ensure you get the quickest recovery possible.
Suitable for all
Massage is safe and can benefit people of all ages, not just sports people! Our assessments and treatments are tailored to each individual patient by our highly trained and experienced practitioners and can be effective for muscle aches and pains from sitting at a desk all day, rehabilitation following an injury for to help get your body ready for a sporting challenge.
What to Expect
Your initial consultation will begin with a full health history to enable your massage therapist to learn more about the condition for which you are seeking help and your goals for treatment. This will be followed by a physical examination involving range of motion tests and posture analysis.
Report of Findings
Following your examination your massage therapist will discuss their findings and talk to you about the treatment options and a plan going forward designed to meet your specific needs.
If X-rays, other imaging or further testing is required, your referral options will be discussed with you at this point.
Treatment and Exercises
Once you are happy with your treatment options and have had any questions you may have answered your first treatment can start. Your first visit will include approximately 45 minutes of sports massage tailored to suit your individual requirements.
Our company organised a really tough 9 day European cycle ride for over 25 employees and clients in support of our chosen charity, with a complete mixture of experienced and novice cyclists. Without the help, advice and support of the clinic I am quite sure we would not have made it to the start (and finish!) lines in such good condition. I personally had a number of sports massage sessions which helped greatly with some long standing issues – I wish I had gone 3 years ago! Overall a fantastic level of help and great support from them…Thank You!”
